Here's how it all began...
While at UT, we took a class trip to Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN. I remember being just overwhelmed with awe at all the interesting ”stuff”. Floor to ceiling carved blocks, drawers and drawers of old type, and beautiful, fascinating machinery.
When I got home, I started looking around online for a press. I wanted to have a little piece of history and to be able to print some small things on my own. While I enjoyed designing and working on the computer, there was something special and more satisfying about getting my hands dirty and working with vintage materials.
My dad, fiancé, and I eventually drove to Canada to Don Black’s printing shop to buy a Vandercook SP-15 and handpick an assortment of typefaces to get me started. It was wonderful!
My own wedding invitations were one of the first projects I printed, and I’ve enjoyed printing ever since!
As a senior at UT and just after getting married, I completed a fall internship at Yee-Haw Industries, a letterpress printshop in downtown Knoxville. I had the opportunity to observe the day-to-day operations of a successful letterpress shop, and it was a thrill for me to just be around all the type and presses!
Most recently I am experimenting using letterpress in conjunction with watercolor, buttons, fibers, and other materials to create one of a kind cards.
The more I print, the more fun I have, and I simply enjoy the act of creating something with my hands!
